The Greenhouse Effect
- How does the greenhouse effect cause the warming of the Earth?
Prelab-
- What is the greenhouse effect?
- Greenhouse gases ( methane, water vapor, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxide) causes some infrared radiation from the sun to be trappd as heat in the atmosphere.
Problem-
- What conditions causes the warming of the atmosphere?
Experiment-
- Materials: 1) Cup
2) Aluminum Foil
3) Lamp
4) Soil
- Experiment: Grab two cups and fill them both with 200 mL of soil. Then, put aluminum foil, which will act as the atmosphere that protects us from harmful sun rays, on top of only one cup. After that, take the beginning temperature of each cup. After you've finished that, put both cups underneath a lamp and wait for five minutes to remove the cups and then record the end temperature. Do not put the thermostat inside the soil because we're not measuring the soil temperature, we're measuring the atmospheric temperature.
- Hypothesis: I think the cup without the aluminum foil will be hotter because the heat goes directly inside the cup.
- Independent variable : Sun
Dependent variable : Temperature
Controlled variable : Aluminum Foil
- Procedure: first, put an equal amount of soil in two different cups and cover one of them with aluminum foil, measure the initial temperature of the air inside each cup then expose them to the light of the lamp, after 5 minutes, measure the temperature of the air inside the cup again.

-Lab Question: How does the greenhouse effect cause the warming of the Earth?
-The biggest reason of warming the atmosphere is the radiations that come from the sun, also some of these reasons because of man as the amount of carbon dioxide increased in the air.
-General Conclusion:
-My hypothesis was correct because the sun does warm us, but the atmosphere layers protect us from harmful rays and from harmful weather.
-Possible Sources of Error : The amount of heat each cup receives, the time.
-Application : The soil represents the earth, the foil represents the atmosphere and the lamp represents the sun, from the experiment, the cup with the foil has less temperature than that without foil, this represents the importance of the atmosphere as it works as a shield to absorb the radiation from the sun and regulates the temperature of the earth and make it suitable for all living creatures.
